Andy's Story

Andy Wheeler didn't expect to find himself facing open-heart surgery in his fifties. Like many patients, he'd been living a fairly ordinary life when the diagnosis arrived — sudden, frightening, and life-changing. The surgery itself was a success, but what followed took him completely by surprise.

The weeks and months after surgery were filled with questions nobody seemed to answer fully. Why did he feel so anxious? Why was he more emotional than usual? Why were some days harder than others, even when the physical wounds were healing? He felt isolated, uncertain, and unprepared for the emotional weight of recovery. The medical team had fixed his heart — but no one had told him what to expect next.

It was out of that experience that Beating the Odds was born. Andy spent months turning his notes, reflections, and hard-won insights into a book he wished had existed during his own recovery — honest, practical, and written in plain English for real people, not medical professionals. Since its publication, it has helped hundreds of patients and their families feel less alone and more prepared for the journey ahead.

The Mission

Andy's mission is simple: no one should navigate cardiac recovery alone. While the book reaches patients at home, Andy recognised that recovery is a daily, ongoing process — and that people need support in the moments between appointments, not just at the beginning.

That's why he's building the My Heart Recovery Coach app. It's designed to sit alongside formal cardiac rehabilitation, offering daily check-ins, personalised encouragement, and a gentle structure to help patients track how they're doing. Nothing clinical or overwhelming — just the kind of thoughtful support a knowledgeable friend might offer.

The app is currently in development, and Andy is committed to building it the right way — grounded in lived experience, reviewed by healthcare professionals, and designed with patients at its heart.
