Your journey
Recovery milestones
A guide to what's ahead after triple bypass. Everyone heals at their own pace — these are typical timings, not deadlines.
Around day 0
Home from hospital
The first days are about rest, gentle movement, and your medications. Fatigue is completely normal.
Around day 14
Wound settling
Your breastbone scar should be drying and closing. Keep it clean and dry, and watch for any redness or heat.
Around day 28
Driving again
Most people can drive about 4 weeks after bypass surgery — once you can do an emergency stop comfortably. Check with your team and insurer first.
Around day 42
Sternum healing
By around 6 weeks the breastbone is much stronger. You can gradually ease off the lifting precautions as your team advises.
Around day 84
Returning to work
Many people return to work around 6–12 weeks, depending on the job. Cardiac rehab will help build your confidence.
Protecting your breastbone
- • Avoid lifting anything heavier than a full kettle for the first 6 weeks
- • Don't push, pull or carry heavy loads while your breastbone heals
- • Hug a pillow to your chest when you cough or sneeze
- • Get up using your legs, not by pushing with your arms
